Games of Small States of Europe 2023: Opening Ceremony Recap

The 19th edition of the Games for the Small States of Europe (GSSE) commenced in Malta with great fervor. The opening ceremony marked the beginning of an exciting week filled with competitive spirit and camaraderie. With participation from more than 1,300 athletes and officials representing nine small European states, the GSSE promises to be a memorable event.

The opening ceremony held at the Floriana Granaries, just a short walk from The Embassy Valletta Hotel, was a splendid showcase of Malta’s vibrant culture and rich heritage. The Parade of Nations, led by Andorra and culminating with the host country Malta, epitomized the unity among the participating nations. Captivating artistic performances, music, and dance enthralled the audience, offering a glimpse into Malta’s diverse traditions.

As the games progress, athletes from across Europe’s small states will compete in a range of disciplines. From athletics, basketball, and judo to rugby 7s, sailing, shooting, squash, swimming, table tennis, and tennis, the competitions promise intense sporting action and outstanding displays of skill.
